Three dead, 9 missing in fishing boat accident near Mangaluru


Mangaluru: Three fishermen were killed and 9 are still missing after fishing boat INS Rabah capsized after allegedly colliding with a Singapore flag merchant ship mv APL Le Havre off Mangaluru coast in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The fishing boat IFB Rabah, owned by Mamantakath Jaffar, had sailed from Kerala’s Beypore on Sunday with 14 migrant fishermen on board. The boat overturned after being hit by the ship approximately 43 nautical miles west from New Mangalore.

Two fishermen identified as Sunil Das (34) of West Bengal and Velmurukan (37) of Tamil Nadu were rescued.

The Indian Coast Guard in a tweet said that it has deployed three ships and an aircraft to search for the missing fishermen.

Bodies of three fishermen were shifted to a Mangaluru hospital. Two of the dead have been identified as Alexander Syrang and Manik Das, from West Bengal.

According to Jaffar, seven of the 14 fishermen hailed from Tamil Nadu and the rest from Bengal.
